Sustainability
is very important to the Boston Red Sox and the initiatives they have
implemented at their Spring Training home at JetBlue Park at Fenway South Stadium
are apparent. Thousands of fans attend each Spring Training game and as a
result, an enormous amount of trash is generated from bottles, plates, food and
packaging waste. To address this issue, The Red Sox not only have recycling
bins throughout the stadium, but also have implemented a “Green Team.” The
Green Team is a comprised of a number of volunteers that walk throughout the seating
bowl, collecting plastic bottles, cups and cans, from those in attendance. In
addition, the Green Team is responsible for educating and encouraging fans to
recycle and maintain a clean environment. Having a Green Team is a valuable
component of the Red Sox’s effort in enhancing its environmental performance, as
it not only increases its recycling rates, but also builds community awareness
of its environmental commitments.
